The 18th edition of the Salon international de l’artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) in Burkina Faso has dedicated a day to traditional leaders, recognizing their importance in preserving cultural heritage. On November 2, 2026, the committee national d’organisation organized a special day for these leaders, who play a crucial role in maintaining the country's traditions. This initiative was welcomed by the Conseil supérieur de la chefferie coutumière et traditionnelle du Burkina Faso.

During this special day, traditional leaders visited the pavilion of creativity, where they discovered various works by Burkinabè artisans on display. They also visited the stand of the Présidence du Faso, the village of the Alliance des États du Sahel (AES) countries, and the Soleil levant pavilion, where participants from different regions of Burkina Faso showcased their creations. This visit allowed them to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the country.

The Minister of Crafts, Serge Poda, highlighted the significance of this edition, which is centered around the theme "African crafts and industrialization: what synergy for a better organization and valorization of local products and cultural heritage." He emphasized that this theme invites reflection on the future while remembering the country's past, as "a people who forget their past live in uncertainty."

According to Minister Poda, African crafts draw their nourishing sap from the depths of the continent's history, traditions, and civilizations. He stressed that the involvement of traditional leaders in this event is not a mere formality but responds to a triple imperative: anchoring the event in endogenous values, contributing to national communion, and benefiting from the blessings of traditional authorities.

The Minister of Crafts emphasized that the SIAO is not just a commercial fair but a showcase of African people's creative genius. He also highlighted that the event's inclusiveness is demonstrated by the special attention given to traditional authorities and moral leaders. This approach aims to foster a sense of national unity and shared cultural heritage.

Ouidi Naaba, representing the Conseil supérieur de la chefferie coutumière et traditionnelle du Burkina Faso, praised the initiative, which honors traditional leaders. He expressed his joy at participating in the event collectively with other representatives of the Council and encouraged the population to attend the fair massively to support local artisans.

The 18th SIAO edition aims to promote Burkinabè crafts and cultural heritage, while fostering a synergy between artisans, traditional leaders, and the government. By involving traditional leaders, the event seeks to recognize the essential role they play in preserving cultural traditions and promoting national unity.
