The Police nationale of Burkina Faso presented the results of the "Bouclier tête durcie" operation, conducted from October 1 to 31, 2026, to reinforce helmet use. A total of 42,448 road users were controlled nationwide. Among them, 30,424 were fined on the spot for not wearing helmets, while 10,027 vehicles were impounded for non-compliance and failure to pay fines immediately. Additionally, 705 vehicles were seized for other traffic infractions.
The operation generated 99,371,000 F CFA in fines for the national treasury. According to the police, the operation recorded an 89.36% helmet compliance rate nationwide, with rates nearing 98% in major urban centers like Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The police also observed a gradual decrease in infractions over the weeks, with the number of people intercepted dropping from 14,165 in the first week to 4,518 in the last week of October.
The Police nationale attributes the success of the operation to increased awareness and adherence to helmet use among road users. Commissioner Sibiri Nébilè Amidou Yoin, Director of Public Security, expressed satisfaction with the results, citing a reduction in traffic infractions as a sign of improved road user behavior. The operation aims to instill a culture of road safety rather than simply punishing offenders or generating revenue.
The "Bouclier tête durcie" operation targeted all road users, with a focus on enforcing helmet use. The police controlled vehicles across the country, issuing fines and impounding vehicles for non-compliance. The operation's success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and the public.
Commissioner Yoin emphasized that the goal of the operation is to protect human lives by promoting a culture of road safety. He encouraged road users to make helmet use a habit, stressing that it should become a reflex for survival rather than a regulatory requirement. The police will continue to intensify controls day and night to achieve better results.
The "Bouclier tête durcie" operation will be followed by a new phase, dubbed "Bouclier double tête durcie," which aims to sustain the momentum and further improve road safety. The police will maintain a strong presence on the roads, enforcing traffic laws and promoting safe behavior among road users.
