The 2026-2027 academic year was officially launched in Burkina Faso on October 1, 2026, at Gounghin Mixed High School in Ouagadougou. The ceremony, themed "School and University Governance, Community Engagement, and Pedagogical Innovation: Levers for Quality Education for All," was attended by high-ranking officials. The event was co-organized by the Ministries of National Education, Literacy, and Promotion of National Languages, Secondary Education, Vocational Training, and Technical Education, and Higher Education, Research, and Innovation.

The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Ousmane Bougma, President of the Legislative Assembly of the People. The theme of the academic year, "School and University Governance, Community Engagement, and Pedagogical Innovation," was highlighted as a pact for the future. According to Professor Moumouni Zoungrana, Minister of Secondary Education and Vocational Training, this theme is crucial in addressing the challenges of the 21st century. He emphasized that the alignment of governance, community engagement, and pedagogical innovation is essential to achieving quality education for all.

Professor Zoungrana noted that the choice of Ouagadougou as the launch site was due to the significant progress made in the education sector in the region. He also highlighted the impressive results of the 2025-2026 academic year, with historical success rates of 95.23% in CEP, 87.23% in CAP, 73.20% in BEP, 54.06% in BEPC, and 61.54% in Baccalauréat. These results demonstrate the efforts made by the education sector to improve student outcomes.

Dr. Ousmane Bougma encouraged the education community, parents, and students to work together to achieve quality education. He emphasized the importance of discipline, listening to teachers, and respecting parents. He also stressed the need to educate children not only intellectually but also emotionally and morally, to become well-rounded Burkinabè citizens.

Fatou Sarah Guigma, a student representative, called on her peers to remain mobilized, focused, and committed to achieving good results. She emphasized the importance of discipline and hard work in achieving academic success. The event also heard from Chantal Umutoni, Representative of UNICEF in Burkina Faso, who highlighted the organization's support for the education sector.

Chantal Umutoni noted that UNICEF's support had enabled the construction and equipping of educational infrastructure from preschool to post-primary levels, worth over $52 million. She emphasized that education is not just a service but a promise to every child to learn, grow, and contribute to society. She called for all children to be given the opportunity to succeed.

The Minister of Secondary Education and Vocational Training also highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving the education sector. These include the introduction of national languages in secondary education, initiation to vocational training from primary to secondary levels, and the integration of technical and vocational education into general education. Other initiatives include the development of a university map, the process of decolonizing taught knowledge, and the normalization of academic years.
