The Direction générale des transports terrestres et maritimes (DGTTM) of Burkina Faso conducted a control operation in Bobo-Dioulasso on October 27, 2026, to enforce vehicle registration regulations. The operation aimed to remind sellers and users of their obligations and promote road safety. The DGTTM, led by Director General Vincent Tougouri, worked with security forces to inspect vehicle sales points and traffic axes in the city.

The operation was prompted by the discovery that some customers were being sold unregistered vehicles. The DGTTM seeks to ensure that all vehicles on public roads have provisional or definitive registration. Director General Tougouri emphasized the goal of achieving 100% registered vehicles, urging users to regularize their situations to minimize risks associated with unidentified vehicles.

The DGTTM delegation commended traders with the "carte W" agreement, which allows them to provisionally register vehicles sold directly on site. This device facilitates buyers' procedures and enables them to circulate while awaiting definitive registration. Some traders, including those from Groupe OMF, Zonga Motors, and Alliance Pingwinde Grâce Moto, welcomed the initiative and expressed satisfaction with the support from competent services.

However, challenges persist, including delays in issuing documents required for definitive registration. Traders mentioned that some vehicle owners have not collected their registration documents, including grey cards and plates, which are already available in their stores. The mission revealed significant stocks of provisional grey cards, plates, and other documents awaiting collection.

Director General Tougouri invited vehicle owners to collect their documents from sales points and announced a dialogue between concerned administrations to address document delivery delays. The verification of vehicle plates also revealed cases where the computer registration had not been completed, meaning the concessionaire had not finalized the electronic recording linking the plate to the grey card.

The DGTTM aims to promote vehicle regularization and enhance road safety through this operation. The organization called on sellers and users to assume their responsibilities, facilitating controls and preventing inconveniences related to unregistered vehicles. Baowendmanegré Zoungrana, Director of the Normalization and Transport Titles (DNTT), clarified that incomplete computer registration does not necessarily imply a false document.

The DGTTM's efforts to enforce vehicle registration regulations and promote road safety are ongoing. The organization will continue to work with stakeholders to address challenges and ensure that all vehicles on Burkina Faso's roads are properly registered and identified. This will help to improve road safety and reduce the risks associated with unregistered vehicles.
