The 18th edition of the Salon international de l'artisanat de Ouagadougou (SIAO) has kicked off in Burkina Faso, attracting thousands of visitors daily. The event, which began on October 30, 2026, features over 6,000 artisans and creators, as well as more than 100 international buyers from various continents. The exhibition is held under the theme "African craftsmanship and industrialization: what synergy for better organization and valorization of local products and cultural heritage."

The SIAO has become one of the major events celebrating African creativity since its inception in 1988. This year's edition showcases the genius and innovative capacity of African artisans, with visitors flocking to see the various exhibits. The event features a village of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), as well as different pavilions housing stands and institutional spaces. Artisans are displaying their wares, including traditional Burkinabé hats, jewelry, and other local products.

Salfo Gansonré, a Burkinabé artisan, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating that it provides a platform for artisans to promote their products. He highlighted the importance of preserving the SIAO, which he believes is a vital showcase for African craftsmanship. Mariam Dembélé, a Malian artisan specializing in jewelry, noted the growing interest in local products among Africans, but also expressed concern about the presence of imported goods in some stands.

The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, emphasized the need for artisans to progress towards industrialization during the opening ceremony. He stressed that mastering raw materials and having control over art is crucial for the development of local industries. Ilboudo K. Théodore, a French teacher who accompanied students to the event, observed that the large turnout demonstrates that African artisans are on the right path and require organization and support to achieve industrialization.

To accommodate the large number of visitors, Burkinabé authorities have adjusted working and school hours in Ouagadougou. Students, such as Romuald Zongo, have welcomed this initiative, which allows them to visit the exhibition and learn about the diverse works on display. The Ghanaian delegation, which is the guest of honor, is also participating in the event, with a special day dedicated to showcasing its cultural heritage.

The SIAO provides a platform for artisans from participating countries, including Mali and Niger, to share experiences, create partnerships, and promote their products. Alassane Ouédraogo, Secretary General of the Ministry of Handicrafts, highlighted the significance of Ghana's participation, which reflects the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

The 18th SIAO exhibition will conclude on November 7, 2026, with a ceremony to reward outstanding artisans. The event has been successful in promoting African craftsmanship and creativity, and it is expected that it will contribute to the development of local industries and economies.
