The Burkinabé National Commission for UNESCO and the National Committee of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program held a press conference on October 28, 2026, in Ouagadougou. The event aimed to announce the main activities of the International Biosphere Reserve Day, which will take place on November 3 and 4, 2026, in Bobo-Dioulasso. This celebration, themed "Inclusive Governance and Sustainability of Biosphere Reserves for Local Community Well-being," seeks solutions to major environmental preservation challenges.

According to Dr. Joséphine Nadinga/Yaméogo, Research Master at CNRST, President of the UNESCO-MAB program and the organizing committee, the chosen theme emphasizes the need for synergy among all stakeholders. The main objective of the day is to contribute to the strengthening of sustainable, participatory, and secure management of biosphere reserves for improved local population living conditions. This year's celebration will focus on promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The commemorative activities will take place over two days in the Guiriko region. On November 3, 2026, the official opening ceremony and a series of panels will occur. The following day, a guided tour of the Bala Hippopotamus Reserve will be organized for students. Biosphere reserves are territories of significant ecological and socio-economic interest, where biodiversity conservation and sustainable use coexist to serve local communities' socio-economic and cultural development.

Biosphere reserves are distinguished territories with an honorary UNESCO label. Inscription by UNESCO-MAB as a biosphere reserve constitutes an international recognition, elevating a national ecosystem to the global ecological heritage category. This recognition demonstrates to the global community and scientists that harmonious coexistence between humans and nature is possible.

The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program is an intergovernmental scientific program launched by UNESCO in 1971. In Burkina Faso, the MAB program falls under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation through the Burkinabé National Commission for UNESCO-CNU. The International Biosphere Reserve Day, officially instituted in 2021 by UNESCO's General Conference, is celebrated annually on November 3.

This day serves as an opportunity for global awareness-raising on biosphere reserves, promoting a balanced and harmonious relationship between humans and nature. The celebration in Bobo-Dioulasso aims to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and promote sustainable management of biosphere reserves. Local communities will benefit from improved living conditions through conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

The International Biosphere Reserve Day celebration in Burkina Faso highlights the country's commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development. By engaging local communities and promoting inclusive governance, the event seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of biosphere reserves and their benefits for future generations.
