The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has stressed the importance of financial institutions adopting modern technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics, to enhance decision-making, risk management, and operational efficiency. BoT Governor Emmanuel Tutuba made these remarks at a conference organized by the Bank of Tanzania Academy in Mwanza. The conference aimed to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in strengthening the financial sector.

According to Governor Tutuba, AI has a significant role to play in transforming how commercial banks and central banks carry out their responsibilities amid rapid global technological advancements. Many institutions have long focused on digital transformation through computerized systems, mobile and internet banking services, and data storage technologies. However, Tutuba noted that AI represents a new phase of development by enabling systems to analyze information, predict trends, and support more efficient decision-making.

The BoT has begun laying the foundation for integrating AI and data analytics into its institutional operations. These efforts include establishing an AI and Data Innovation Hub and approving policies and strategies to guide the adoption of the technologies while safeguarding data privacy, accountability, and human oversight. This move is expected to improve the bank's operational efficiency and enhance its decision-making capabilities.

To accelerate research, experimentation, and innovation in AI applications, the BoT has signed cooperation agreements with five higher learning and research institutions in Tanzania. These partnerships will focus on various fields, including economic research, financial sector supervision, currency management, and payment systems. The agreements are expected to drive innovation and expertise in AI adoption in the financial sector.

The conference, held under the theme “Beyond Digital Transformation: How Artificial Intelligence Is Transforming Banking and Central Banking,” brought together academics, experts, financial sector practitioners, and policymakers. The event provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in strengthening the financial sector. Key discussions focused on the potential benefits and risks of AI adoption in financial institutions.

Governor Tutuba emphasized that AI adoption is crucial for financial institutions to remain competitive and provide secure, customer-focused financial services. The BoT's efforts to integrate AI and data analytics into its operations are expected to set a precedent for other financial institutions in Tanzania. The bank's move is also expected to contribute to the country's economic growth and development.

The adoption of AI and data analytics in financial institutions is expected to have a significant impact on the Tanzanian economy. With the BoT leading the way, financial institutions are expected to invest in AI and data analytics to improve their operations and services. This move is expected to drive economic growth, improve financial inclusion, and enhance the overall efficiency of the financial sector.
