The bodies of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy, arrived at their Gletwin home in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, October 7, to lie in state overnight ahead of their burial on Thursday. A convoy of luxury vehicles carrying members of both families collected the bodies from Doves Funeral Services in Harare. Chivayo's coffin, marked WMC 777 and draped in the Zimbabwean flag, reflected his status as a declared provincial hero.

Chivayo and his wife Lucy were among five people who perished in a helicopter crash on September 30. The Bell 430 helicopter was flying from Gandami in Chikomba district to Marondera when it crashed in misty conditions, killing all on board, including security officer Senelisiwe Magagula and pilots Calvin Soda and Courage Mutavira. The couple will be buried side by side at Glen Forest Memorial Cemetery in Harare.

According to reports, the bodies were severely burnt in the impact, and extensive searches at the crash site failed to recover their heads. As a result, the couple will be laid to rest without their heads. The Zimbabwean government has launched a full investigation into the crash, in accordance with the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Act.

The preliminary investigation is underway, with the wreckage transferred to Charles Prince Airport for detailed forensic examination. International experts will analyze the helicopter's wreckage, prevailing weather conditions at the time of the crash, maintenance records, and documentation relating to the operator and crew. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.

Wicknell Chivayo was a widely recognized and polarizing figure in Zimbabwe, known for his flamboyant lifestyle, high-profile social media presence, and closeness to several African heads of state. His designation as a provincial hero was in recognition of his contributions to Zimbabwe's development. Chivayo's funeral is expected to be a high-profile ceremony, with several African leaders in attendance.

Tanzania's President Suluhu Hassan was among the dignitaries who traveled to Zimbabwe for the funeral. Chivayo's uncle appealed to Zimbabweans to mourn peacefully as dignitaries arrive for the ceremony. The burial arrangements have been planned to ensure a smooth and dignified procession.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday, October 8, with the couple being interred side by side at Glen Forest Memorial Cemetery. Several African leaders are expected to attend the ceremony, which promises to be a grand sendoff for the controversial businessman and his wife.
