The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has highlighted the Government's Big Push Electrification Project as a crucial initiative to unlock the region's economic potential and improve community livelihoods. He emphasized that reliable electricity access is essential for education, healthcare, agriculture, and enterprise development. The Minister made these remarks at the sod-cutting ceremony for the project in Dambai, Oti Region. The project aims to provide electricity to more communities, thereby enhancing socio-economic opportunities.
The Big Push Electrification Project is part of the Government's broader infrastructure and development agenda. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition's 2026–2029 sector plan prioritizes expanding electricity access to achieve universal coverage. Initially, 77 communities in the Oti Region were slated to benefit from the project; however, the number has increased to 90 due to additional interventions by the Ministry. This expansion will significantly improve the lives of residents in these communities.
The Regional Minister expressed gratitude to the Ministry for increasing the project's scope, which will provide more communities with improved access to electricity and its associated socio-economic benefits. He stressed that reliable electricity supply is vital for supporting agro-processing activities, enhancing healthcare delivery, improving security, and creating a conducive environment for businesses and investors. The project's impact is expected to be multifaceted, driving growth across various sectors.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, announced that construction works under the programme are scheduled to commence in October 2026 and be completed by the end of March or early April 2027. He also mentioned that the electrification programme will be complemented by other initiatives aimed at improving the reliability, quality, and efficiency of electricity supply nationwide. These efforts will strengthen the distribution network and enhance power supply to communities and businesses.
Dr. Jinapor cited the ongoing deployment of over 2,000 distribution transformers within the operational areas of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). This intervention aims to improve power supply and reliability. Additionally, he announced an all-in-one solar street-lighting programme, under which about 23,000 units are expected to be installed nationwide during the year. The Oti Region will benefit from this programme, alongside the rehabilitation of existing grid-connected streetlights.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition also introduced a community street-lighting initiative, allowing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to collaborate with the Ministry to provide streetlights for communities. These combined interventions aim to expand electricity access while improving the quality, reliability, and security of power supply to support socio-economic development. The initiatives demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing the region's energy needs.
