The Benin police have successfully dismantled a counterfeit currency and Indian hemp trafficking network operating in the Agbotagon area of Allada commune. The operation, dubbed "Houègbo zéro escroc," was conducted over three days and resulted in the arrest of five suspects, including one woman. The police seized a significant quantity of counterfeit currency, Indian hemp, and other contraband goods. The operation was led by the Houègbo district police station.

According to reports, the police raided a residence in Agbotagon on November 3, which had been converted into a makeshift headquarters for the traffickers. The house belonged to a suspect who is currently on the run. The police discovered a well-organized team, including a hairdresser who was allegedly involved in manufacturing counterfeit currency and trading in Indian hemp. The hairdresser, along with two other accomplices, was apprehended during the raid.

The police found an impressive array of items during the search, including 1,780,000 CFA francs in counterfeit 10,000 CFA franc notes, paper cut for currency production, 28 packets of Indian hemp, motorcycle parts, and several SIM cards. Additionally, a bottle claimed to have magical properties and amulets were also discovered. The police believe that the suspects may have been relying on supernatural assistance to further their illicit activities.

As the investigation progressed, the suspects began to confess to the crimes. The alleged counterfeit currency manufacturer revealed the names of her supposed suppliers, leading the police to conduct further raids. On November 6, the police targeted a family suspected of supporting the network. They found 1.5 kg of Indian hemp and 2 kg of contraband medicine at one of the residences.

The police also discovered printing materials and new blank banknotes at another suspect's residence, who was believed to be the mastermind behind the network. Two additional suspects were arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to five. The police are continuing their search for other suspected members of the network who remain at large.

The dismantling of the trafficking network has dealt a significant blow to the counterfeit currency and Indian hemp trade in the region. The police operation demonstrates the authorities' commitment to combating organized crime and disrupting the activities of those involved in such illicit activities.

The suspects are expected to face prosecution for their alleged crimes. The police operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in Benin and to protect citizens from the harm caused by counterfeit currency and illicit substances.
