The Benin government has approved a program to rehabilitate rural roads and dirt roads classified as part of the 2026-2027 campaign. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on October 7, 2026. According to the government's report, 18,000 km of roads will be treated, and the rehabilitation works will also include comfort interventions on axes that have suffered severe degradation.
The rehabilitation program includes the construction of 21 culverts of various sections to replace those that have collapsed or deteriorated on the Gomparou-Kandérou section, with partial rehaussement of the carriageway. Additionally, the program involves the construction of culverts on the Pèrèrè Centre-Soubado road at PK 1+342, and on the Tanguiéta-Tanongou section at PK 28+250.
The government's program also includes the repair of a collapsed structure on the Boukoumbé-Manta section at PK 10+800, and the reinforcement and partial sanitation of the Zakpota Centre-Kpakpamè (11.7 km), Sinwè Kpota-Akiza (14.1 km), and Zogbodomey-Akiza (17.5 km) axes. These interventions aim to ensure traffic continuity and support local socio-economic activities.
A total of 75,385 km of strategic axes presenting severe degradation have been identified and will be taken into account in the program. These include the Gomparou-Founougo (18 km) axis, access roads to the Kpataba (12 km) and Akodéha (26 km) Agricultural Technical High Schools, and the Djondjizoumè Centre-Lokotan (4,317 km), Ouèdèmè-Monoto (9,527 km), and Kessawé-Vèha-Dessa-Cessahoukanmè (10,541 km) sections.
The Benin government's decision to embark on this program is driven by the need to guarantee traffic continuity and support local socio-economic activities, particularly in rural areas. The rehabilitation of these roads will also facilitate access to basic social services and the evacuation of agricultural products.
The program is part of the government's efforts to improve the country's road network and promote economic development. According to the government, the rehabilitation of these rural roads will have a positive impact on the lives of citizens, particularly those living in rural areas.
The Benin government has recently undertaken several initiatives aimed at improving the country's infrastructure and promoting economic growth. These initiatives include the creation of new agencies and partnerships to support development projects in various sectors.
