In a ceremony held at the Guichet unique de protection sociale (Gups) in Sèmè-Podji, the Beninese government launched the distribution of 330 school kits to orphans and vulnerable children in the Ouémé department. The kits, valued at 7,920,000 F CFA, will be distributed across the nine communes of Ouémé, with each commune receiving 30 kits, except for Porto-Novo, which will receive 90 kits due to its three Gups.
The school kits are composed of essential items such as backpacks, notebooks, and pens, tailored to the educational level of each child, from primary to secondary school. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to prioritize social protection, human capital development, and access to education, as stated by Dr. Solange Odjo Ahlonsou, Director of the Departmental Family and Social Action of Ouémé.
The distribution of school kits aligns with the vision of President Romuald Wadagni and the commitment of Minister of Family and Social Action, Véronique Tognifodé, to ensure that no vulnerable child is left behind in the education system. Dr. Ahlonsou also highlighted the government's measures for the 2026-2027 school year, including free tuition for all girls in public schools and exemption titles for vulnerable boys.
The beneficiaries, represented by Rock Adantofodji and Marcelline Hounkokoé, expressed their gratitude and commitment to working hard in school to encourage the government to continue this initiative. Roger Gankpin, first deputy mayor of Sèmè-Podji, welcomed the choice of his commune to host the official launch of the kit distribution, highlighting the council's efforts to support the education system.
The kits are not meant to replace other measures but to complement them, according to Dr. Ahlonsou. She urged the children to work hard, be assiduous, and respect their teachers and parents, while also encouraging parents and guardians to take care of the kits and monitor the children's education closely.
