The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has emphasized that there are significant technical and procedural differences between charging prepaid electricity cards from company branches and electronic applications. Many citizens assume that charging their electricity cards from company branches or electronic payment methods, such as "Fawry" machines or mobile applications, is the same as long as the amount paid is the same. However, this is not the case.

According to sources within the Ministry, when a customer charges their electricity card from a company branch, the card is placed on a special machine called a "reader." This machine not only updates the card's financial balance but also performs a comprehensive update of the meter, including adjusting the clock and date accurately, checking for any tampering, and updating the current consumption bracket. In contrast, electronic payment methods only update the card's financial balance.

The Ministry's sources also pointed out that when charging from company branches, only the legally stipulated fees, taxes, and stamp duties, as well as customer service fees, are deducted based on the consumption bracket, without any additional fees going to the branch. However, when using electronic payment methods like "Fawry," a small administrative service fee is added, typically ranging from 2 to 5 Egyptian pounds, depending on the amount paid.

Charging electricity cards through company branches provides customers with a detailed consumption report, showing the exact amount of kilowatt-hours consumed since the last charge. This helps customers review their consumption and ensure that they are not being overcharged or wasting energy. In contrast, electronic payment methods only confirm the payment and transfer of funds, without providing any consumption details.

The Ministry's sources stressed that company branches are the only place where customers can repair damaged electricity cards, obtain replacement cards, or resolve software errors displayed on the meter, such as tampering or memory full errors. Additionally, company branches provide customers with accurate information about their debts and allow them to schedule payments or know the exact value of their installments.

The sources also noted that prepaid meters are programmed to reset to the first consumption bracket at midnight on the first day of each month. However, if the meter's internal clock is not updated regularly, it may continue to charge customers based on a higher bracket for several days into the new month. To avoid this issue, the Ministry recommends that customers visit company branches to charge their cards at least once every three to four months.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy advises customers to take advantage of charging their prepaid electricity cards from company branches or authorized distribution points to ensure accurate metering, avoid errors, and take advantage of additional services, such as detailed consumption reports and debt scheduling.
