The 67th edition of the Beirut International Arab Book Fair is scheduled to take place from October 9 to 18, featuring 163 publishing houses and nearly 100 seminars with around 250 participants. The event, organized by the Arab Cultural Club, aims to promote culture and literature in the face of adversity. This year's fair is particularly significant given the current challenges in Lebanon, including the recent war and an unprecedented economic crisis since 2019.

The book fair's organizers view this year's event as an achievement and a challenge to the harsh conditions in Lebanon and the region. According to Salwa Al-Sneehoraa Baassiri, head of the Arab Cultural Club, hosting the fair under these circumstances is a testament to the importance of culture in times of hardship. The event first took place in 1956 and has continued to be a significant cultural event in Lebanon.

The seminars at the book fair will cover a wide range of topics, including history, politics, economics, literature, and artificial intelligence. Several sessions will focus on the loss of archaeological and heritage sites in southern Lebanon due to recent events. Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salama had previously stated that three out of five archaeological castles classified by UNESCO as endangered heritage sites are under Israeli occupation, while a fourth has been damaged.

The book fair will also feature special sections on book production, graphic design, and cover art, with seven universities participating to provide students with an opportunity to showcase their work and build a bridge between education and the job market. This initiative aims to foster creativity and innovation in the field of graphic design.

Despite facing challenges in previous years, including cancellations due to popular protests in 2019, the Beirut port explosion in 2020, and renovation work in 2021, the book fair resumed its activities in March 2022. Baassiri emphasized that the fair's success demonstrates Beirut's ability to master the language of culture and that what is needed is a language of communication, not conflict.

The event is expected to attract a diverse audience interested in literature, culture, and intellectual discussions. With its rich history and diverse program, the Beirut International Arab Book Fair continues to be a prominent cultural event in the region. The fair's ability to bring together publishers, authors, and intellectuals from various backgrounds underscores its significance in promoting cultural exchange and understanding.
