Acting Upper East Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Abdul Rahman Danladi, has challenged the common perception that young people who participate in sports are academically weak. According to him, this narrative is wrong and can discourage talented young people from developing their sporting abilities. Danladi, also the Head Coach of Ghana’s national women’s volleyball team, emphasized that young people should regard their sporting abilities as an additional advantage while continuing to take their education seriously.
Danladi shared his experience as a student under his Physical Education teacher, Mr Anas, who encouraged students to participate in sports without compromising their academic work. He recalled that his teacher instilled in him the importance of balancing sports and education. Danladi said young athletes should understand that recognition for their sporting abilities should not become a reason to neglect their education. He continues to encourage young people with sporting potential to develop their talents.
The Acting Regional Sports Director identified negative perceptions about sports as one of the challenges affecting participation. He said changing attitudes towards sports would be important in encouraging more young people to participate while continuing their education. According to Danladi, people who participated in competitive sports and later pursued careers outside athletics are examples of how sports and education can coexist.
Danladi pointed out that the Upper East Region has historically produced competitors in disciplines including volleyball, football, handball, and athletics. However, he noted that the region is working to regain its previous standing in sports. The region has a rich sporting history, and efforts are being made to revive its former glory.
The Acting NSA Director emphasized that the sporting discipline is an advantage that young people have over others. He encouraged them not to look down on their education because they are sportsmen. According to Danladi, young athletes should take their education seriously and not let their sporting abilities distract them from their academic pursuits.
Danladi's comments come at a time when the region is preparing for various sporting events. The Upper East Region has a number of talented young athletes who are eager to participate in sports. However, some of them may be discouraged by the perception that sportsmen are academically weak. Danladi's message is expected to encourage young people to pursue their sporting dreams while taking their education seriously.
The message from Danladi is significant, as it highlights the importance of balancing sports and education. According to him, young people should not neglect their education because of their sporting abilities.
