President John Dramani Mahama has projected that the town of Bechem in the Ahafo Region will become the chicken capital of Ghana when the Poultry and Meat Processing Factory is completed. The President made this statement during an inspection tour of the ongoing construction work on the project, which is 50 percent complete. The inspection was part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region.

He emphasized that the factory would create jobs for more people upon completion.

As part of efforts to ensure a value chain in the poultry industry, the government started with the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative before work began on the factory. This initiative aimed to increase poultry production in the country. According to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, Ghana's domestic poultry production had increased from 4.6 percent to 22 percent as of May 2026, following the launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative under the Feed Ghana Programme.
