The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) is strengthening its efforts to modernize public payments within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). This is being achieved through the connection of public treasuries to the Platform for Interoperable Instant Payment Systems (PI-SPI). The PI-SPI platform enables public treasuries to send and receive payments, including salaries, scholarships, subsidies, taxes, and fees, regardless of the beneficiary's or payer's account.

The PI-SPI platform provides real-time tracking of transactions, facilitating faster and more secure transactions. Côte d'Ivoire is among the countries that have already become operational, with its public treasury meeting all the requirements and standards of PI-SPI. Côte d'Ivoire's public treasury regularly makes mass payments via the platform. The BCEAO is supporting the other public treasuries in the union to facilitate their gradual integration into this regional system.

The integration of public treasuries into the PI-SPI platform is expected to enhance financial inclusion and modernize payment infrastructures in the UEMOA region. This development will enable the population and economic actors to carry out transactions with the state more quickly, securely, and accessibly. The BCEAO's efforts aim to promote financial inclusion and improve the efficiency of payment systems.

The BCEAO's move to digitalize public treasuries is part of its broader strategy to improve the efficiency of payment systems in the UEMOA region. By leveraging technology, the bank aims to reduce transaction costs, increase the speed of transactions, and enhance the overall security of the payment process. This digitalization effort is expected to have a positive impact on the region's economy.

Côte d'Ivoire's successful integration into the PI-SPI platform serves as a model for other UEMOA member states. The BCEAO is working closely with the other public treasuries to ensure a smooth transition to the new payment system. The bank's support will enable the gradual integration of public treasuries into the PI-SPI platform.

The digitalization of public treasuries in the UEMOA region is expected to have a significant impact on the region's economic development. By improving the efficiency of payment systems, the BCEAO's efforts will contribute to the growth of economic activities and enhance the overall business environment in the region.

The BCEAO's efforts to digitalize public treasuries are in line with its mandate to promote economic integration and cooperation among UEMOA member states. The bank's initiatives aim to create a more efficient and secure payment system, which will facilitate trade and economic transactions within the region.
