The Bayelsa State Government has initiated an evacuation process targeting individuals experiencing mental health challenges in the state. A team comprising medical doctors, social welfare officers, and rehabilitation specialists, supervised by State Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Hon. Joanah Gigi, carried out the exercise in Yenagoa metropolis. The goal is to provide these individuals with necessary medical attention, rehabilitation, and possible reintegration into society.
According to Commissioner Gigi, the exercise was conducted following a directive from Governor Douye Diri. The primary objective is to restore the health and dignity of the affected persons. During the exercise, 15 individuals were evacuated and taken to a specialist hospital for immediate medical care. The Commissioner stated that the intervention aims to improve the lives of vulnerable persons in the state.
The number of individuals evacuated was limited by the available bed spaces at the hospital. Commissioner Gigi mentioned that the government will continue the exercise to reach others still on the streets. The current phase focuses on the Yenagoa metropolis, where many vulnerable persons have been identified. The medical team expects the initial treatment program to last approximately three weeks.
Upon completion of the treatment, the government plans to identify the places of origin of the individuals and facilitate their repatriation where necessary. Commissioner Gigi described the intervention as a collaboration between the Assured Prosperity Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs. The government aims to provide support for the rehabilitation and reintegration of these individuals into society.
Commissioner Gigi praised Governor Diri for extending the intervention to vulnerable non-indigenes living in the state. She emphasized that the governor's concern for humanity is commendable, as he does not discriminate against anyone in need of assistance. The exercise coincided with activities marking the 30th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State.
