De Wills Baseball Club of Bayelsa has emerged victorious in the Super Five Baseball Championship, defeating defending champions Delta State in the final held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The championship was the culmination of a national league season that started with 17 clubs competing in various locations, including Kwara and Rivers. The top five teams were then invited to Abuja to compete for the national title.
According to Uche Odozor, President of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation, the Super Five brings together the best teams from the league. He explained that the top five teams qualify after the year's league, where 17 teams competed, and the top five are invited to compete for the top honors. Odozor also mentioned that baseball was introduced in Nigeria in 1960 but was disrupted by the civil war in 1967 and reintroduced in the 1990s.
Odozor highlighted that Nigeria's large youth population gives baseball a huge advantage. The federation has brought in analysts from Japan to assess home-grown talents during the championship. Some players will be taken to Japan in November for further intensive training, preparatory to those that will make the national team that will fight to qualify Nigeria for the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
Nigeria National Baseball Team Head Coach, Mr. Shinya Tomonari, from Japan, has been appointed to lead the team. His mission is to make Nigeria the strongest and most respected baseball team in Africa. Tomonari has previously managed Ghana, Tanzania, and South Sudan and has been involved in African baseball for 30 years. He will implement Baseballership Education, a human development program through baseball, in 13 African countries.
Tomonari evaluated players through the Super Five with Japan's leading analyst Daisuke Hoshikawa and assistant analyst Takumu Yamada using the Trackman System to measure and quantify each player's abilities. Based on these data, 23 national team candidates will be selected, and individualized development plans will be created. The team will prepare for the Africa Championship scheduled for next July.
Captain of Team Delta, Suleman Abdulrahman Bala, whose team had dominated Nigerian baseball for many years as defending champions, said the competition was fair but alleged a change in format. Bala called for more sponsors and stronger states to support the sport. Captain of De Wills Baseball Club, Adebisi David, said winning the title was stressful but credited his teammates, coach, and management for the success.
The Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation is working to grow the sport, with plans to introduce baseball into schools and military barracks. The federation has also started producing gloves in Nigeria to reduce costs and supply other African countries. The Executive Director of Arnold Sports International Foundation, Adeyinka Adewusi, said the foundation is going to schools and engaging the National Sports Commission for support to grow the sport.
