Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, has condemned the demolition of La Pleasure Beach, a popular tourist destination in Accra. In a statement issued on October 3, 2026, he expressed concern over the destruction of movable property belonging to business operators, which could have been easily removed by the owners. Bawumia described the beach as an important source of livelihoods, particularly for young people.

The demolition exercise, which took place on October 2, 2026, affected several structures and businesses along the La Beach area, including La Pleasure Beach and Polo Beach Club. Bawumia highlighted the social, economic, and cultural significance of the beach, stating that it supported thousands of people and had hosted numerous international events. He also noted its contribution to tourism, particularly during the NPP government's "Year of Return" initiative.

Bawumia questioned the manner in which the demolition exercise was carried out, describing it as "sad" and "bizarre." He emphasized that movable assets, which could have been easily removed, were destroyed. The former Vice President pledged to support the restoration of businesses and the development of the area into a major tourism and economic center.

Bawumia proposed rebuilding the beach economy, issuing leases to individual businesses, and redesigning the space to meet appropriate standards. He also suggested arrangements that would allow the Labadi Beach Hotel and other operators to coexist with smaller businesses, which he described as integral to the beach's economy. Additionally, he pledged to engage with the owners of Laboma Beach to resolve their concerns.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has explained its decision to seek the removal of structures and unauthorized occupants from the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra. In a statement, SSNIT's Board of Trustees stated that the action was necessary to protect hotel investments.

Bawumia's proposals for the La Beach area include helping operators manage their businesses and addressing environmental concerns. He stated that work on the lagoon would form part of efforts to resolve flooding and related challenges. The former Vice President emphasized his commitment to saving the thousands of jobs supported by the beach economy and improving them.

The demolition of La Pleasure Beach has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for answers from the authorities. The La Dadekotopon NDC and MP have demanded answers over the demolition, while Bawumia's spokesperson, Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has earned a prestigious U.S. leadership program nomination. The incident has highlighted the need for sustainable and inclusive development in Ghana's tourism sector.
