Security operatives and members of the Katsina Community Watch Corps have reportedly captured a suspected bandit commander identified as Samagi. The capture was made during an ongoing operation targeting criminal networks operating across parts of Katsina State. Samagi is said to be associated with notorious bandit kingpin Kachalla Maha, whose network has been linked to several attacks and kidnappings in the state.
Videos circulating on social media purportedly show a man identified as Samagi, wearing a yellow shirt, being questioned alongside an injured associate by members of the Community Watch Corps. However, the circumstances surrounding the footage and the identities of the individuals have not been independently verified. The reported arrest comes amid intensified security operations against bandit groups in Katsina.
Recent reports have documented operations by the Katsina Community Watch Corps against individuals allegedly connected to Kachalla Maha. On September 17, two men identified as Abubakar and Ubale Change were reportedly arrested in Matazu over allegations of supplying ammunition and running errands for Maha. These arrests demonstrate the continued efforts of security agencies to dismantle bandit networks in the region.
Samagi has also been linked to the network allegedly responsible for the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, in the Matazu area in May 2026. Abubakar and his wife were abducted by armed men along the Matazu axis on May 30. Reports at the time identified Kachalla Muhammadu as the bandit leader allegedly holding the retired general.
The abductors reportedly demanded the release of detained associates in exchange for the victims. The retired general subsequently died while in captivity. The Nigerian Television Authority reported that he died from medical complications associated with diabetes and hypertension while being held by armed bandits. Katsina State authorities later announced that troops had rescued four kidnapping victims during continuing operations against the network.
The reported capture of Samagi could provide security agencies with information about the structure and operations of the bandit network, including its commanders, associates, and supply channels. However, there was no official confirmation of Samagi’s reported capture from the Katsina State Government, police, military, or another recognized security authority.
The state police command said earlier in September that intelligence-led operations conducted in August resulted in 247 arrests and the rescue of 17 kidnapped victims. Questions remain over whether the man shown in the circulating video is indeed Samagi, his precise role within Maha’s network, and whether the reported arrest could lead security forces to Kachalla Maha himself.
