Bamburi Cement Plc has expressed its readiness to supply more than 1 million tonnes of cement for the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ at Lamu. The company's Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Ndugwa, stated that they are pursuing a commercial opportunity to provide quality cement and concrete products throughout the refinery's development cycle. This move is expected to support the construction of the 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery.
The refinery, described as the world's largest single-train crude oil facility, is expected to process a wide range of crude grades, reducing reliance on any single feedstock source. Bamburi Cement plans to offer its locally manufactured Bamburi DuraCem, a 42.5-grade, sulfate- and chloride-resistant specialty cement designed for large-scale and marine construction. This product is suitable for the refinery's construction needs, given its location in a marine environment.
In addition to Bamburi DuraCem, the company is proposing its Ultra-series concrete range, which includes waterproof, self-compacting, pervious, and fibre-reinforced mixes for precision-driven construction needs. These products are expected to play a crucial role in the construction of the refinery, which will consume roughly 1 million tonnes of cement and concrete. Bamburi Cement is confident that it can deliver these materials from its Mombasa plant.
The company's bid for the supply contract follows a series of high-profile infrastructure contracts, including the Standard Gauge Railway, Dongo Kundu Highway, and several dam projects. This experience in large-scale construction supply has positioned Bamburi Cement as a reliable partner for major infrastructure projects. The company recently secured a US$250 million EPC contract to build a 1.6 million-tonne-per-year clinkerisation plant in Matuga, Kwale County.
The clinkerisation plant, aimed at more than doubling Bamburi Cement's clinker and cement output, is expected to enhance the company's capacity to meet the demands of large-scale construction projects. The plant's expansion will enable Bamburi Cement to increase its production and supply of cement and concrete to various projects, including the Dangote-Lamu refinery.
Geoffrey Ndugwa emphasized that Bamburi Cement is well-positioned to support the construction of the Lamu refinery, given its experience in supplying cement and concrete for large-scale infrastructure projects. The company's products and services are expected to play a critical role in the development of the refinery, which is a significant investment in Kenya's energy sector.
The Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ at Lamu is a major project that is expected to have a significant impact on Kenya's economy. Bamburi Cement's potential supply deal for the project is a testament to the company's capabilities and experience in the construction industry. The company is poised to play a key role in the project's development, and its products and services will be crucial to its success.
