Local cement provider Bamburi Cement Plc is seeking a commercial opportunity to supply over 1 million tons of cement needed for the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ in Lamu, Kenya. The Ksh.2 trillion project has government assurance that locally manufactured products will be used. Bamburi Cement Chief Executive Officer Mr. Geoffrey Ndugwa stated that the firm will explore delivering its eco-friendly, sulfate- and chloride-resistant 42.5 grade speciality cement, Bamburi DuraCem Cement.
The Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ, a Ksh.2 trillion mega project, will have the flexibility to process various crude oils. The refinery's construction works will consume approximately 1 million tons of cement and concrete solutions. Bamburi Cement is well-positioned to manufacture and deliver these products from its Mombasa plant. The company's locally manufactured Bamburi Cement Ultra-series speciality Concrete products are designed for precision and performance.
Bamburi Cement's commercial proposition to the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ includes its Ultra-series concrete products. These products comprise Ultra-Waterproof Concrete, Ultra-Self Compacting Concrete, Pervious Concrete, and Ultra-Fibre Reinforced Concrete. Ndugwa expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that Bamburi Cement is celebrating the milestone as construction works for the world's largest single-train crude oil refinery get underway.
The 700,000 barrel-per-day refinery will enable the use of feedstocks sourced from multiple regions, reducing reliance on any single supply source. Official reports indicate that the project will significantly impact Kenya's infrastructure development. Bamburi Cement has previously provided cement and concrete solutions for complex national development projects, including the Talanta Sports Stadium Development and the Standard Gauge Railway.
Bamburi Cement has reinforced its strategic ambition to secure long-term clinker self-sufficiency and enhance production capacity. The company signed a US$250 million (Kshs 32 billion) Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Sinoma CBMI Construction Co., Ltd for a turnkey clinkerisation factory in Matuga, Kwale County. This state-of-the-art plant will incorporate advanced, carbon-neutral technologies to reduce environmental impact.
The new clinkerisation plant aims to more than double Bamburi Cement's clinker and cement production capacities. The plant will have a production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes-a-year, enabling the company to power Kenya's infrastructure development and economic transformation. Through this project, Bamburi Cement Plc aims to increase its clinker production from 1 million Tons to 2.6 million Tons and its cement production from 1.8 million Tons to 4 million Tons.
The construction of the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ and Bamburi Cement's potential supply deal signify significant investments in Kenya's infrastructure development. The project is expected to drive economic growth and create opportunities for local businesses. With its comprehensive range of cement and concrete products, Bamburi Cement is poised to play a crucial role in the project's success.
