Spanish shipping company Baleària has marked a significant milestone with the launch of its first 100% electric fast ferry at the Armón shipyards in Gijón. The ferry, designed to connect Tarifa, Spain, and Tanger, Morocco, is expected to enter service in summer 2027. This project is part of Baleària's strategy to pioneer a green corridor between Europe and Africa. The new ferry, along with a second one currently under construction, will operate with exclusive electric propulsion, eliminating emissions, noise, and vibrations.
The launch of the ferry involved a complex process, including the controlled flooding of the dry dock to allow the vessel to float. The ship, measuring 87 meters in length, features an aluminum structure designed for lightness, strength, and high performance. It is equipped with a large-capacity battery system, offering 14 MWh of energy storage. This innovative design and technology demonstrate Baleària's commitment to accelerating the decarbonization of maritime transport.
Adolfo Utor, President of Baleària, highlighted the significance of this project, stating that it brings the company closer to achieving its goal of zero net emissions by 2027, decades ahead of the 2050 target. He emphasized the importance of innovation, investment, and industrial collaboration in driving sustainable change in the maritime sector. Laudelino Alperi, General Director of Armón, expressed pride in contributing to this pioneering project, reaffirming the company's commitment to developing sustainable and technologically advanced naval solutions.
The construction of the two ferries is taking place in parallel at the Armón shipyards, with the second vessel being built in the same dry dock. After the launch of the first ferry, the dry dock will be drained to complete the construction of the second catamaran on land. The first ferry will now undergo interior outfitting and the progressive activation of its auxiliary systems, followed by sea trials to certify its operational reliability and safety.
The project to manufacture the two electric ferries and electrify the ports of Tarifa and Tanger City represents an investment of over €200 million. This ambitious initiative is set to make a significant impact on reducing emissions and promoting sustainable maritime transport between Europe and Africa. The introduction of these electric ferries will not only minimize environmental impact but also enhance the travel experience for passengers.
The Tarifa-Tanger route is a strategic corridor for Baleària, and the company is committed to providing a high-quality service while minimizing its environmental footprint. The electric ferries will offer a fast, efficient, and sustainable transportation solution, supporting the growth of trade and tourism between Spain and Morocco. The successful implementation of this project could serve as a model for future sustainable maritime initiatives.
With the launch of its first 100% electric ferry, Baleària has taken a significant step towards achieving its sustainability goals. The company is poised to make a positive impact on the environment and the communities it serves, while demonstrating the feasibility of electric propulsion in the maritime sector. As the shipping industry continues to evolve, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable future.
