Tanzania's Water Minister Jumaa Aweso has issued a directive to the contractor handling the Sh53.12 billion Tanga water project, instructing them to accelerate work and complete the project by November 30, 2026. The project, funded through a bond and inspired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan's directives, has reached 75 percent completion. Aweso made the remarks during an inspection tour at the Mowe mega water tank in Tanga, alongside Permanent Secretary, Ms Mwajuma Waziri.
The Tanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (Tanga Uwasa) project aims to improve water services across Tanga City, Muheza, and Mkinga districts. According to Tanga Uwasa managing director, Mr Geofray Hilly, the project involves expanding the Mowe plant's capacity from 45 million to 60 million litres per day. This expansion will significantly enhance the water supply in the region, benefiting thousands of residents.
A key component of the project is the construction of a 35-million-litre storage tank, capable of sustaining supply for up to 18 hours during technical faults. This feature will ensure a consistent water supply, even in the event of technical issues. The project is being implemented under a flagship alternative financing model, with citizens supporting Tanga Uwasa voluntarily contributing the funds.
Minister Aweso emphasized that no time extensions will be granted, and the contractor must work day and night to meet the deadline. He stressed that as long as funds are available, there is no excuse for delays. The minister expects significant progress by the end of October, and the project manager from China Railway Seventh Group, Mr Dai Bin, has pledged to deploy extra workforce to execute the Minister's directive.
The project is being closely supervised by the ministry, with Permanent Secretary Ms Waziri assuring that all infrastructure will be operational by the November deadline. The ministry's close supervision aims to ensure that the project is completed on schedule and meets the required standards.
