Africa World Airlines (AWA) has introduced new domestic fares starting from GH₵999 on selected routes, in response to customer requests for cheaper options to travel within Ghana. The airline made the announcement through a social media post, stating that the discounted fares are aimed at making domestic air travel more affordable. This move comes after years of complaints from Ghanaians about the high cost of flying within the country.
Under the revised pricing, passengers flying from Accra to Kumasi can now book tickets from GH₵999, while the Accra–Takoradi route starts from GH₵1,062, and the Accra–Tamale route is now priced from GH₵1,139. These fares apply only to selected routes and are subject to seat availability as well as the airline's standard booking conditions. AWA has encouraged intending travellers to book early ahead of their planned journeys.
Domestic air travel in Ghana has long been criticised as disproportionately expensive compared to regional and international routes. This has made flying an option mostly for business travellers and those with no alternative, rather than a routine choice for ordinary families. The high cost of domestic flights has been a grievance that has featured repeatedly in public discussion, with passengers comparing local fares unfavourably with the price of international tickets.
AWA's latest move is being presented as a direct reply to public pressure, rather than part of a broader fare restructuring across the industry. The airline is one of the carriers operating scheduled domestic flights within Ghana, connecting Accra's Kotoka International Airport to regional capitals such as Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale. The new fares could make a difference for traders, students and families who need to move quickly between Ghana's major commercial centres.
The reduced fares on the Accra–Kumasi, Accra–Takoradi and Accra–Tamale corridors could also benefit business travellers, who could cut down on time lost to road travel with cheaper same-day return options. This could have a positive impact on Ghana's economy, as faster travel times enable businesses to operate more efficiently.
It remains unclear whether the discount is tied to a limited promotional period or represents a more permanent adjustment to AWA's domestic pricing. The airline has not indicated a date by which the current pricing will expire, and travellers interested in the offer have been advised to book ahead, as the fares depend on availability.
The development is significant, as domestic airfares in many countries, including Ghana, are often priced per sector depending on demand, fuel costs and operating expenses. AWA's move may put pressure on other airlines operating in Ghana to review their domestic fares, potentially leading to a more competitive market.
