The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), Abuja, and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish AAAU's Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering. The agreement was reached on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during a visit by the AAAU delegation to ABU, Zaria. This partnership aims to deepen academic cooperation between the two universities, particularly in engineering education, postgraduate training, research, and manpower development for Nigeria's aviation and aerospace industry.
The acting vice-chancellor of AAAU, Dr. Mustapha Sheikh Abdullahi, stated that the university seeks ABU's mentorship and technical expertise to support the establishment and development of the specialised faculty. He emphasized the increasing demand for highly specialised manpower in Nigeria's aviation and aerospace sector. Abdullahi noted that ABU is a strategic partner due to its long-standing experience in engineering education and the depth of expertise available within its Faculty of Engineering.
AAAU was established with a specialised mandate to address the aviation and aerospace manpower gap in Nigeria and across Africa through teaching, research, innovation, and industry collaboration. The proposed Faculty of Aeronautical and Space Engineering represents a major component of the university's long-term strategy to produce highly skilled professionals capable of supporting the country's aviation, aerospace, and emerging space industries. Abdullahi said the institution is seeking to leverage ABU's decades of experience in engineering education, academic research, and postgraduate training.
The partnership will also explore collaboration in Online Distance Learning (ODL), an area in which ABU has considerable experience as one of the pioneering institutions in Nigeria. The proposed ODL partnership would enable AAAU to expand access to aviation and aerospace education for international students and working aviation professionals who may be unable to participate in conventional full-time programmes due to their professional commitments.
The initiative will complement the university's conventional academic programmes and broaden opportunities for continuous professional and postgraduate development within the aviation industry. According to Abdullahi, this collaboration is crucial given the increasing demand for highly specialised manpower in Nigeria's aviation and aerospace sector. The partnership is expected to support the country's aviation and aerospace industry by providing highly skilled professionals.
Responding, the vice-chancellor of ABU, Zaria, Prof. Adamu Ahmad, welcomed the AAAU delegation and commended Dr. Abdullahi for taking up the challenge of pioneering a university dedicated specifically to aviation and aerospace education. Prof. Ahmad assured AAAU of ABU's commitment, particularly through its Faculty of Engineering, to supporting the university's manpower development drive and the establishment of the Faculty.
The MoU signing follows an earlier engagement between the two institutions in May. The partnership between AAAU and ABU is expected to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria's aviation and aerospace sector. The collaboration will focus on producing highly skilled professionals capable of supporting the country's growing aviation and aerospace industries.
