Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for transparency and accountability in the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). In a statement, Atiku demanded full disclosure of N11.2 trillion recorded by NNPCL as receivables from the Federation for advances and costs, including protection of oil and gas assets. He said Nigerians deserve to know how much of the amount went to pipeline security, beneficiaries, and results achieved.
Atiku's statement was issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of ADC Presidential Campaign Council. Atiku queried NNPCL's 2024 and 2025 accounts, which showed roughly N17.5 trillion and N11.2 trillion in different claims on the Federation, respectively. He said Nigerians cannot tell from these totals what was spent on pipeline surveillance, what was paid, who was paid, and for what work.
Atiku also compared N11.2 trillion receivables with N3.1 trillion allocated to the Ministry of Defence in 2025. While the figures belong to different accounting categories, the contrast raises questions about government priorities. Atiku's call for transparency is part of a broader demand for accountability in government spending.
Atiku further asked the Federal Government to publish details of pipeline security contracts and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract. He requested information on the procurement process, competing bids, evaluation, and contract documents. Atiku also asked if contractors handling federal projects have contributed to the President's re-election activities.
The former Vice President said the administration should empathize with Nigerians over socioeconomic challenges and provide clear accounting of public funds. He stated that the government asking families to make sacrifices must be willing to account for every naira it claims on the public purse.
Atiku's demands come as Nigerians face significant socioeconomic challenges. The ADC presidential candidate promised that his party would focus on making life more affordable for Nigerians if elected in 2027. Atiku's call for transparency and accountability is part of a broader effort to ensure that public funds are used efficiently.
The NNPC's financial records have been a subject of controversy in recent times. Atiku's demands for transparency are likely to increase pressure on the government to provide clarity on its spending. The government has not yet responded to Atiku's demands, but it is expected to provide more information on its spending in the coming days.
