A devastating airstrike by Russian forces on a school building in southeastern Ukraine has resulted in at least 31 fatalities and 48 people still unaccounted for. The attack occurred in the town of Komyshuvakha, located in the Zaporizhzhia region, where the building was being used as a shelter and humanitarian aid distribution center. Local governor Mykhailo Semikin reported that the school's newly-built, EU-funded reinforced basement, designed to withstand most strikes, collapsed due to the massive force of the bombs, causing a fire to break out.

The school building, which was not in use for classes due to the ongoing conflict, had been converted into an administrative center and humanitarian hub by local authorities. The shelter was attacked on Monday during the distribution of humanitarian aid, according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. The strike is considered one of the deadliest since the start of the war, and it occurred just before Russia launched another large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

President Zelensky described the strike as "utterly horrific" and stated that the attack was a deliberate act of terror. He emphasized that the timing of the strike, coinciding with the US congressional elections, was not coincidental, and that Russia believes America will not notice its actions. Zelensky called for international assistance to help Ukraine defend its skies and prevent further missile strikes.

The airstrike on Komyshuvakha followed a familiar pattern, with Russian forces launching an initial wave of strikes, waiting for emergency services to arrive, and then striking again. This "double-tap" strike resulted in the deaths of at least two first responders and four police officers who were assisting local residents take shelter in the underground school.

According to Semikin, Russia used KAB-500 and FAB-3000 bombs in the attack, which are designed to destroy heavy concrete fortifications and bunkers. The three-ton aerial bomb contains nearly 1.5 tons of explosive material, highlighting the devastating impact on the school building and its occupants.

The past few months have seen a significant escalation of Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian towns and cities, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. Notable incidents include the killing of 33 people in Kramatorsk last month, 38 people in a drone strike on an ammunition depot near Kyiv in August, and 33 people in a mass missile attack on Kyiv in July.

The international community has been urged to take notice of the ongoing terror and provide assistance to Ukraine. President Zelensky stressed the importance of building peace honestly and reliably, with America playing a crucial role in this effort. The Ukrainian government continues to work towards defending its skies and protecting its citizens from further attacks.
