The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Ibadan chapter has awarded scholarships worth ₦1.1 million to 11 indigent students of the institution. The scholarship cheques were presented during the union's congress, highlighting ASUU's commitment to supporting students from low-income backgrounds. Out of 56 applicants, 11 qualified to receive grants ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦200,000.
The beneficiaries received the scholarships through ASUU's national body, UI chapter, and Professor Tajudeen Akanji. Two students received ₦200,000 each, five students got ₦100,000 each, and four others received ₦50,000 each. The recipients include students from various departments, such as Archaeology and Anthropology, Political Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmacy.
According to Dr. Tayo Ajibade, Vice-Chairman of UI-ASUU, the union's national body directed all chapters to support indigent students. He emphasized that ASUU has been championing improved funding to ensure qualitative education is accessible to all, regardless of financial background. The scholarships aim to alleviate the financial burden on students and encourage them to focus on their studies.
Professor Tajudeen Akanji, one of the sponsors, expressed his commitment to helping students from poor backgrounds, citing his own humble upbringing as motivation. He believes that education can change a person's life and intends to continue supporting indigent students. The initiative has been welcomed by the beneficiaries, who see it as a much-needed relief amidst rising tuition-related expenses and economic challenges.
