The Ghana News Agency's (GNA) publication on the infrastructural challenges faced by the Asemko District Assembly (D/A) Basic School has led to the construction of a six-unit classroom block for the school. According to Mr. Paul Kodwo Kwaw, Assembly Member for the Kikam/Asemko Electoral Area, the GNA's story highlighted the plight of pre-school children who were receiving lessons on the verandas of dilapidated structures. This brought the concerns of the school to the attention of duty-bearers, resulting in a swift response.
The GNA, on February 08, 2026, published a story headlined: “Stakeholders appeal for infrastructural support for Asemko DA Basic School.” The story revealed that pre-school children were exposed to unfavourable weather conditions, particularly during rainstorms, as they received lessons on the verandas of dilapidated structures. Mr. Kwaw commended the GNA for visiting the school and highlighting its challenges to bring them to the attention of duty-bearers.
Following the GNA's publication, stakeholders, including the Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC) and Mr. Kwaw, engaged the District Assembly for the project. Officials of the Assembly later informed Mr. Kwaw that Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembelle, had directed that a contract be awarded for the construction of the six-unit classroom block and ancillary facilities for the Asemko D/A Basic School.
Mr. Kwaw disclosed that the MP, who had read the GNA story, reportedly told Assembly officials that the “media was on his neck” and impressed upon them to include the Asemko D/A Basic School project in the “budget by all means.” This led to the award of a contract for a six-unit classroom block with a computer laboratory, staff common room, and toilet facility.
Work on the project commenced in August 2026 and was initially expected to be completed within six months. However, the contractor has assured stakeholders that the classroom block would be completed within three months, ahead of schedule, considering the urgent infrastructural needs of the school. The structure has reached the roofing stage.
Mr. Kwaw expressed delight at the award of the contract by the Ellembelle District Assembly following the intervention of Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah. He commended the GNA for highlighting the infrastructural challenges of the Asemko District Assembly (D/A) Basic School, which contributed to the construction of the six-unit classroom block.
The project was inspected by Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembelle, and Mr. Kwaw. The completion of the project is expected to provide a better learning environment for the students at the Asemko D/A Basic School.
