Arusha Regional Commissioner CPA Amos Gabriel Makalla has confirmed that preparations for the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) have been completed. The assembly will be held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) from October 5-9, 2026. This will be the first time Tanzania hosts the major parliamentary gathering. Makalla gave the assurance when he met IPU Secretary General Ambassador Anda Filip at his office in Arusha.

The event is expected to bring together more than 2,000 delegates representing the IPU's 183 member parliaments. Among those attending will be 65 Speakers of Parliament from different countries, alongside other parliamentary representatives and participants. The assembly will provide an opportunity for Tanzania to showcase its capacity to convene major international meetings. It will also bring global parliamentary leaders together in Arusha.

Ambassador Filip thanked the regional authorities for their warm reception and cooperation, commending the extensive preparations made ahead of the event. He also expressed appreciation for the efforts made to ensure the assembly's success. The IPU Secretary General's visit to Arusha was an opportunity to assess the preparations and confirm the readiness of the host city.

The assembly will address a range of international issues relevant to parliaments and their members. One of the key matters will be the leadership of the IPU, including the election of a new President following the completion of Dr Tulia Ackson's three-year term. The gathering will provide a platform for delegates to engage in discussions and make leadership decisions.

Beyond the logistical preparations, the assembly will offer delegates an opportunity to experience Tanzania beyond the conference venue. According to Ambassador Filip, participants will have opportunities to visit some of the country's tourism attractions during their stay. This will enable them to appreciate Tanzania's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

With preparations now completed, Arusha is set to welcome parliamentarians from around the world for five days of discussions, leadership decisions, and international engagement. The assembly will place Tanzania at the centre of global parliamentary diplomacy. The event is expected to have a significant impact on the region, promoting international cooperation and understanding.

The successful hosting of the assembly is a result of collaborative efforts between various institutions. Regional authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders have worked together to ensure the event's success.
