The KwaZulu-Natal Murder and Robbery Unit has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the brutal killing of nine people at the Palmiet Road Informal Settlement in Sydenham, South Africa. A suspect allegedly linked to the mass killing was arrested in the Obuka area of Melmoth on Wednesday night, September 23. This development brings renewed hope for answers and justice to a community that has carried the trauma of the attack for nearly five years.

The arrest relates to the October 16, 2021 killings, when six people were shot dead at a house in the Palmiet Road Informal Settlement. Three others were killed in two separate shootings a short distance from the first crime scene on the same day. Police believe the same suspects were responsible for all three incidents. The victims were identified as siblings, Thandolwethu and Yanga Mathangana, Hombakazi Baliso, Siyanda Ncedani, Clifford Moyo, Fikiswa Shomela, and Siphelele Maphisa, as well as two others.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed that two suspects were identified during the investigation. One was subsequently traced to Empangeni, where he resisted arrest and was fatally wounded during a shootout with police. The second suspect remained elusive until detectives tracked him to Melmoth, where he was cornered and arrested. The police efforts to track down the suspects have been ongoing for years.

The Sydenham Community Police Forum (CPF) has applauded police for the long-awaited breakthrough in the investigation. Chairman, Manser Akoo, described the arrest as a significant development for the community, bringing a 'massive sense of relief' to the residents. He praised investigators for their persistence in pursuing the case, saying that dealing with a case of this magnitude requires immense resolve.

The original massacre sent shockwaves through the area, with residents fearing that those responsible remained among them. Residents described the victims as having been shot in their homes after armed attackers allegedly forced their way into three separate dwellings. Among those killed were children aged five and nine. The uncertainty had left people afraid to trust even those around them.

A community leader questioned whether the killings were targeted, pointing out that the three homes attacked were not situated close together. In the aftermath, some residents left the informal settlement, with fears mounting over the identity and whereabouts of the perpetrators. The arrest has strengthened community confidence in the police and demonstrated the importance of sustained investigative work.

The latest arrest comes as the Murder and Robbery Unit faces another major investigation following the killing of 11 people at Ziko in KwaMakhutha on Tuesday night. Col Netshiunda said detectives were following several leads in that investigation and appealed to anyone with information to assist police. The police continue to work towards bringing perpetrators to justice.
