The campaign organisation of Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo state, has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to stop blaming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration's failures. In a statement signed by the organisation's director of Media and Publicity, Prince Bisi Oladele, the campaign organisation expressed disappointment in Governor Makinde's comments on the state's continued reliance on diesel-powered generators to operate streetlights.
According to the statement, Governor Makinde attributed the state's reliance on diesel-powered generators to President Tinubu's inability to fix the nation's electricity within the first four years of his administration. However, the campaign organisation countered that the Electricity Act 2023, signed into law by President Tinubu, empowered states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity to meet their energy needs.
The campaign organisation noted that Oyo state had taken steps to address its electricity needs by establishing the Oyo state Electricity Regulatory Commission and completing the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This move gave the state the legal and regulatory authority to attract investors, license electricity projects, and develop sustainable power solutions.
The organisation described Governor Makinde's comments as embarrassing, particularly for a governor who prides himself on being an electrical engineer. They emphasised that the purpose of leadership is to solve problems rather than use them as excuses for failure.
The campaign organisation argued that Governor Makinde has no excuse for his administration's incompetence and glaring failures. They stated that after more than seven years in office, the governor cannot continue blaming external forces for problems that fall within the authority and capacity of his administration to address.
The organisation's statement added that Governor Makinde's administration has had ample opportunity to address the state's electricity challenges but has failed to do so. They urged the governor to take responsibility for his administration's failures and focus on finding solutions to the state's problems.
