A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Yakubu Sani, has advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to shift his focus from political battles to governance and the welfare of workers in the FCT. Sani, who is also the founder of the Arewa Mandate Alliance, made this appeal while speaking with journalists in Abuja. He emphasized the need for Wike to prioritize the needs of the people in the FCT.
Sani drew a comparison with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who he said has successfully focused on governance and project delivery without engaging in public verbal attacks. According to Sani, Governor Uzodimma has built a strong support base for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by working quietly and concentrating on delivering projects. Sani urged Wike to take a cue from Uzodimma and adopt a similar approach.
The APC chieftain expressed concern over Wike's frequent use of project commissioning events to launch political attacks, warning that this approach risks overshadowing the administration's infrastructure achievements. Sani stressed that physical infrastructure development must be complemented by human capital development, municipal services, and civil service welfare. He emphasized that sustainable urban development requires functional public institutions alongside roads and bridges.
Sani highlighted the lingering challenges in basic utilities across the FCT, including erratic water supply, indiscriminate parking, and uncollected waste. He expressed concern that many FCT residents lack access to basic services, while motorists compete with refuse dumps for space on major roads. Sani urged Wike to prioritize the welfare of teachers, healthcare workers, and civil servants in the FCT.
The APC chieftain emphasized that the welfare of workers in the FCT should be a priority, alongside infrastructure development. He noted that it is essential to build beautiful roads and bridges, but equally important to prioritize the people who teach children, treat the sick, and run the machinery of government. Sani urged Wike to remain focused on executing President Tinubu's agenda for the nation's capital.
Sani advised Wike to allow his performance to speak for itself, rather than using every commissioning ceremony to attack APC governors who are committed to Tinubu's re-election. He concluded that President Tinubu gave Wike a job to do in Abuja, and he should concentrate on that job. Sani emphasized that Wike's focus should be on delivering quality work, rather than engaging in politics.
The appeal by Sani comes at a time when the FCT is experiencing significant development, with ongoing capital projects across the territory. However, the concerns raised by Sani highlight the need for a more balanced approach to governance, one that prioritizes both infrastructure development and the welfare of workers and residents. The FCT Minister has yet to respond to Sani's comments.
