A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Yakubu Sani, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to shift his focus from political attacks to governance and the welfare of workers in the nation's capital. Sani, who is also the founder of the Arewa Mandate Alliance, emphasized that Wike should prioritize delivering on the mandate given to him by President Bola Tinubu and improving the living conditions of FCT residents.
Sani urged Wike to broaden his focus beyond infrastructure development, such as roads and bridges, to include the welfare of teachers, healthcare workers, and civil servants, as well as addressing challenges like inadequate water supply, indiscriminate parking, and refuse disposal across the capital. He cited the example of Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is working quietly and concentrating on governance without engaging in political attacks.
The APC chieftain cautioned that Wike's increasingly confrontational political rhetoric could distract from the infrastructure projects being delivered under the Tinubu administration. He advised Wike to let the projects executed under his supervision demonstrate his performance, rather than using commissioning ceremonies as platforms for political exchanges.
Sani emphasized that Wike's priority should be fulfilling the President's mandate for the FCT and improving the quality of life for residents of the nation's capital. He urged Wike to ensure that every road and bridge commissioned in Abuja is an opportunity to discuss development, rather than an occasion to abuse or denigrate perceived opponents.
The APC chieftain also urged Wike to address the welfare of teachers, healthcare workers, and civil servants in the FCT, who are often overlooked in the development process. He noted that many FCT residents face challenges such as lack of access to clean water, while motorists compete with refuse dumps for space on major roads in the city.
Sani added that Wike could enhance his political standing by showing that effective governance, rather than political confrontation, remains the priority of his tenure as the FCT minister. He encouraged Wike to concentrate on his job and let the quality of his work speak for him, rather than using every commissioning ceremony to attack APC governors who are committed to Tinubu's re-election.
The development comes amid continued tensions between Wike and some APC governors, with Wike recently alleging that certain governors are behind some of the political challenges confronting him. Wike has maintained that his support for Tinubu's presidential bid does not require him to back APC candidates in other elections, amid growing tensions within the party.
