Nigerian globetrotter and businessman Oliver Odili recently celebrated his 66th birthday on October 23, 2026. On the occasion, he reflected on his experiences traveling the world and highlighted the need for a welfare system in Nigeria. According to Odili, many countries have a support system for their citizens, which is lacking in Nigeria. He cited examples of how systems operate in different countries he visited or lived in, emphasizing the importance of a welfare package to cushion the pains of capitalism.

Odili, also known as the Ohamadike 1 of Alaike Obowo in Obowo LGA of Imo State, pointed out that in countries like Germany, there is a "Peoples Bank" concept where the government and rich individuals put aside funds to support citizens in need. He expressed wonder at why the Nigerian government does not have a similar system, allowing citizens to access funds in times of need. Odili noted that most people in Nigeria are unhappy with the lack of support for the vulnerable and believe that only politicians have access to public funds.

The businessman emphasized that every country sets aside funds to support the weak, but in Nigeria, nobody knows about this fund. He advocated for a welfare package for citizens, stressing that all hands cannot be equal and that governments have identities of all citizens. Odili suggested that the government should fish out people who can be trusted to manage an endowment fund, which would provide support to those in need.

Odili recalled his experience in Germany, where he was provided with food, shelter, and money when he arrived as a foreigner. He noted that the police took his fingerprint and checked for any criminal record before providing assistance. The government also helped him access a cash card and directed him to a place where he could seek political asylum if needed. Odili praised Germany's policy of integration, which allows foreigners to access education and training.

The Nigerian businessman also compared Nigeria's situation with that of Dubai, which has transformed from a small place to a thriving city. He noted that Dubai's leaders have built a country that attracts investors and provides opportunities for its citizens. Odili wondered what Nigeria's welfare money is, given the taxation and revenue generated in the country. He expressed concern that Nigeria is not saving for the next generation and is not providing support for its elderly citizens.

Odili referenced the Peoples Bank concept introduced by former Military President Ibrahim Babaginda, but noted that it is unclear where the initiative went wrong. He emphasized that Nigerians should be captured and helped through a welfare system, and that leaders should build their country by providing opportunities for citizens. Odili expressed respect for leaders like the Sheik who built Dubai, which is now a thriving city.

The businessman concluded that Nigeria's lack of a welfare system is a serious oversight, and that the Peoples Bank concept is the answer to providing support to the aged, poor, and weak. He noted that an identity system, such as the National Identity Number (NIN), can prevent abuse of the system. Odili emphasized that a welfare system would guarantee that people are living and are guaranteed of tomorrow, making them calm and secure.
