Alpha Namibia Industries Renewable Power Limited (ANIREP) has announced that its joint venture with TotalEnergies S.A.S and Sinco Investment One Hundred Seventy-Eight (Pty) Ltd has been selected for the award of the 20MWac Okatope Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Project. The selection was made by NamPower, the Namibian state-owned power utility. The project is one of six being procured by NamPower from independent power producers through a competitive international bidding process.

The Okatope project aims to increase Namibia's locally generated renewable energy capacity. The project will have approximately 25.15MWdc of installed solar PV capacity and an export capacity of 20MWac. It will be located near the Okatope Substation in the Oshikoto Region. The project is expected to generate approximately 64GWh of electricity in its first full year of operation. This will contribute significantly to Namibia's renewable energy goals.

The joint venture brings together the expertise of ANIREP, TotalEnergies, and Sinco. ANIREP's managing director, Iyaloo Ya Nangolo, expressed his company's enthusiasm for working with NamPower and its partners to conclude the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and deliver the project. The partnership combines ANIREP's local renewable energy development and operating capabilities with TotalEnergies' international experience in developing, financing, and operating renewable energy projects.

TotalEnergies EP Namibia managing director and country chair, Mariam Kane-Garcia, welcomed the selection, reflecting TotalEnergies' commitment to supporting Namibia's energy development through a multi-energy approach. The company looks forward to working with NamPower, ANIREP, and Sinco to deliver a project that will contribute to electricity supply and the growth of renewable energy generation in Namibia.

The project's development will be undertaken by the joint venture under a development agreement between ANIREP, TotalEnergies, and Sinco. ANIREP's subsidiary, HopSol Africa, will provide technical capabilities through its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and operations and maintenance (O&M) activities. This will ensure the project's successful execution and operation.

The selection of the joint venture is subject to a final award and the execution of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and related agreements with NamPower. Once completed, the project will be developed under the Modified Single Buyer framework. The joint venture also sees opportunities for innovative structures and funding models to serve private-sector customers through an aggregation model in Namibia and the wider SADC region.

The Okatope Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Project is a significant step towards increasing Namibia's renewable energy capacity. The project's success will depend on the final award and the execution of the PPA. If successful, the project will contribute to Namibia's energy security and economic growth. The joint venture's selection is a positive development in Namibia's efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy mix.
