The African Energy Chamber announced on 5 October that João Filipe, founder and CEO of Cabinda Shipping Services (CABSHIP), has been named the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award winner by African Energy Week (AEW). Filipe will receive the award at the AEW Gala Dinner & Awards in Cape Town this month. The award recognises his contribution to Angolan local content, entrepreneurship, and the growth of an indigenous services industry.
CABSHIP, an Angolan-owned logistics and supply chain company, has operated since 2009, starting as a stevedoring and shipping agent at Cabinda's commercial port. The company has offices in Cabinda, Soyo, and Luanda, with active contracts supporting Chevron's offshore operations in Blocks 0 and 14. CABSHIP has also worked with Azule Energy and Etu Energias, offering integrated logistics, petroleum materials management, warehousing, procurement, and offshore support services.
According to the organisers, CABSHIP manages client inventory worth close to $1 billion, as stated by Filipe in 2025. The company has also acquired a 50,000-square-metre fabrication yard near Malongo in Cabinda. A 2025 report on the Angola Oil & Gas conference mentioned that CABSHIP is working to launch an offshore diving and offshore support business in the Cabinda Special Economic Zone.
Filipe has pushed for closer cooperation between international operators and Angolan firms, urging local companies to professionalise and meet international standards. This would enable them to eventually export their capabilities to other African markets. CABSHIP has integrated AI-based tools to improve cargo tracking and operational planning, showcasing its commitment to innovation.
The company's growth and success have not gone unnoticed. NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, praised Filipe's achievements, stating that he has shown what local content should achieve: African companies that can negotiate as credible, competitive partners of the biggest international operators. Ayuk added that Filipe's success demonstrates that local firms can build scale and win trust.
CABSHIP has a partnership with Angola's National Petroleum Institute, training 15 young people from Cabinda, Zaire, Bengo, and Luanda in industrial electricity for renewable energy systems and international welding. This initiative highlights the company's commitment to developing local talent and contributing to the growth of Angola's energy sector.
The award given to Filipe speaks to a broader debate across Africa's oil and gas sector, with producing countries seeking to create competitive African firms through local content rules. CABSHIP is presented as an example of this transition, demonstrating the potential for African companies to become major players in the industry.
