AngloGold Ashanti, the world's fourth-largest gold producer, has announced a $900 million investment plan to boost its annual gold production by at least 400,000 ounces by the end of the decade. The company, listed on the Johannesburg and New York stock exchanges, aims to expand its existing mines in Tanzania, Guinea, and Brazil to solidify its global production base. This move is part of the company's strategy to increase its production capacity and capitalize on the current high gold prices.

The majority of the investment, $480-580 million, will be allocated to the Tanzanian mine of Geita, which is expected to increase its annual production from 492,000 ounces in 2025 to 600,000 ounces by 2030. In Brazil, $200-250 million will be spent on expanding the Cuiabá mine, which is projected to add 75,000 ounces to its current production of 194,000 ounces in 2025. Additionally, $70 million will be invested in Guinea's Siguiri mine to increase its production by 100,000 ounces, following last year's output of 289,000 ounces.

These expansion projects are built on existing infrastructure, reducing implementation timelines. The investment plan comes on the back of a 12% increase in AngloGold Ashanti's operating profit to $1.57 billion in the third quarter, driven by higher gold prices. The company produced 2.164 million ounces in the first nine months of the year and targets 2.8-3.17 million ounces for 2026.

AngloGold Ashanti's expansion plans are set against a backdrop of changing regulatory environments in Africa. Ghana has recently required mining companies, including AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont, and China's Zijin Mining, to use local mining contractors by December 2026, or face sanctions. This move could reshape the industry's supply chains and presents an additional challenge for operators in the region.

Based on a long-term gold price of $3,000 per ounce, AngloGold Ashanti expects its expansion projects to yield internal rates of return above 35%. However, these projections depend on stable gold prices, controlled operating costs, and adherence to project timelines in evolving regulatory environments. The company's strategy focuses on extending existing productive sites rather than pursuing new acquisitions.

By prioritizing the expansion of existing mines like Geita, Cuiabá, and Siguiri, AngloGold Ashanti is adopting a cautious approach that leverages its current infrastructure and expertise. This strategy aims to maximize returns on existing assets before considering new developments. The company's success in meeting its production targets and adapting to local regulations will be crucial in maintaining its position in the global market.

The $900 million investment plan underscores the growing tension between the production ambitions of major mining companies and the increasing demands of host countries for local content. Ghana's recent directive may set a precedent for other African countries, and AngloGold Ashanti's ability to balance rapid expansion, profitability, and compliance with local regulations will be critical to its future success in Africa.
