ANC Regional Task Team member and former Richmond mayor Samora Ndlovu was shot several times while travelling on the R56 near Thornville on Tuesday night. The 43-year-old Ndlovu was travelling in a white BMW towards Pietermaritzburg when another vehicle allegedly drove in front of him and blocked his path of travel. According to eyewitnesses, an occupant of the vehicle got out and opened fire on Ndlovu's car.
Ndlovu was initially taken to Richmond Clinic before being transferred to St Anne's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where he is receiving further treatment. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that police had registered a case of attempted murder and were investigating the incident. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown, and police are working to identify the suspects and their vehicle.
Ndlovu previously served as regional secretary of the ANC's Moses Mabhida Region, which covers parts of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. He also previously served as secretary of the ANC's regional executive committee. Currently, he serves on the ANC's Regional Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal. His roles in the ANC indicate that he is a senior politician in the region.
The incident comes amid heightened concern over attacks targeting political figures in KwaZulu-Natal, where several politicians and public representatives have been targeted in violent incidents in recent years. The ANC and other political parties have expressed concern over the increasing violence and called for greater protection for politicians and public figures.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist the police with their investigation. The police are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews with witnesses to gather more information about the suspects and their vehicle.
The shooting of Ndlovu has sparked widespread condemnation from various sectors of society, including the ANC and other political parties. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety and security of politicians and public figures in KwaZulu-Natal.
