The Anambra State Government has issued a warning to supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) against backing Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election. In a statement, the government accused Obi of working against APGA since leaving the party in 2014. The government described support for Obi as a betrayal of the party that helped launch his rise to national prominence.

Obi governed Anambra State on the platform of APGA between 2006 and 2014. However, his first spell in office was interrupted by his impeachment in November 2006. He formally left APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party in October 2014. Since then, Obi has moved between several parties, including the Labour Party, the African Democratic Congress, and currently, the NDC.

The Anambra government accused Obi of turning against the political platform that helped him rise to prominence. The government alleged that since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him. The statement also referred to political developments in 2025, accusing Obi of backing forces opposed to APGA while President Bola Tinubu supported the party.

The warning comes amid an escalating dispute between Obi and the Anambra government over debts allegedly inherited from his administration. Anambra Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, claimed that the state was still servicing loans contracted by previous administrations, including those of Obi and Willie Obiano.

Obi rejected the allegation, insisting that he left office without unpaid salaries, pensions, or contractor debts. He also claimed that his administration left N2.1 billion in ecological funds for the state. However, the Anambra government disputed his account, with Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, claiming Obi left behind $123.77 million in external debt.

The Anambra government urged APGA members in Anambra not to abandon the party because of Obi's 2027 presidential ambition. The government stated that Anambra is APGA and urged supporters to defend their home and resist the NDC. The fresh political attack comes as Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso continue to build momentum for the 2027 election.

The dispute between Obi and the Anambra government reflects a deeper struggle for control and influence within the state's politics. As the 2027 election approaches, tensions are likely to escalate between Obi's supporters and the Anambra government.
