The Anambra State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Otuocha Market due to an inter-communal dispute between Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam communities. The dispute resulted in the loss of five lives. Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim gave the directive during an assessment visit to the affected communities. The closure is based on the instruction of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. All economic and other activities in the market are suspended pending investigations and appropriate action.

The crisis erupted when Aguleri people attempted to erect a signpost and install security cameras in the market area. Traditional rulers of Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam, Igwe Michael Idigo and Igwe George Ekwealor, stated that the incident claimed three lives in Aguleri and two in Umuoba-Anam. Several others were hospitalized, and valuables were destroyed. The traditional rulers commended the State Government for its swift intervention, which helped prevent further casualties and destruction.

Deputy Governor Ibezim, who is also the Chairman of the Anambra State Boundary Committee, emphasized that no community leader or local government chairman has the authority to determine boundaries between communities without the State Government's knowledge. The State Boundary Committee is responsible for demarcating and monumenting boundaries within the state. This assertion aims to clarify the roles and responsibilities in boundary determinations.

The inter-communal clash resulted in significant damage to property. Several houses, shops, and a rice processing factory containing bags of rice were burnt. Some traders were seen fleeing the area with their remaining goods. The Anambra Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nnanna Oji, and other government officials accompanied Deputy Governor Ibezim on the visit to assess the situation.

The Deputy Governor's visit aimed to evaluate the situation and provide government support. He was accompanied by key officials, including the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Vepor Egbuna, and Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, Mr. Ekenechukwu Okoye. Their presence underscores the government's commitment to addressing the crisis and finding a resolution.

The Anambra State Government's swift action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state. The closure of the Otuocha Market is a temporary measure to allow for investigations and to prevent further violence. The government's intervention has been commended by traditional rulers and residents, who appreciate the efforts to restore calm.

The incident highlights the need for clear boundary demarcations and effective community leadership. The Anambra State Government's emphasis on its role in boundary determinations aims to prevent similar conflicts in the future. The government is expected to continue working with community leaders to find a lasting solution to the dispute and ensure peace in the affected areas.
