The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) has partnered with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to strengthen community participation and accountability in health service delivery. This collaboration aims to improve the quality and responsiveness of health services through effective systems, access to information, and sustained public engagement. The partnership was made possible through the Expertise France 5% Initiative Grant.
The Community Scorecard approach provides a platform for communities and health service providers to identify challenges, discuss priorities, and contribute to improving health services. Dr. Charity Binka, Executive Secretary of AMMREN, emphasized the importance of this approach in a webinar organized by AMMREN and the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (PPMED) of the GHS. The webinar brought together officials of the GHS, media practitioners, and key partners to share experiences and deepen their understanding of the Community Scorecard approach.
Dr. Binka highlighted the crucial role of the media in translating technical information into accessible public knowledge, bringing community concerns to the attention of decision-makers, and highlighting positive practices. She emphasized that responsible and evidence-based reporting can help strengthen transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the health system. The media can play a vital role in ensuring that lessons emerging from communities are communicated widely and that the voices of citizens are heard beyond the immediate project locations.
The webinar was part of a larger effort to scale up the National Community Scorecard Initiative across all 16 regions and 261 districts in Ghana. Ms. Aseye Kpodotsi, Programme Coordinator of the Community Scorecard Initiative, stated that the initiative aims to enable communities to rate health services and act on their findings to improve services and the quality of care. The project is being implemented under a 48-month grant funded by Expertise France through the French 5% Initiative.
The Community Scorecard Initiative is coordinated by the PPMED through the Community Scorecard Secretariat at the GHS Headquarters. The initiative seeks to amplify the voices of communities in primary healthcare delivery and strengthen the health system. By enabling communities to provide feedback and act on their findings, the initiative aims to improve the quality and responsiveness of health services.
Dr. Binka expressed appreciation to partners, including the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), and the West Africa Programme to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAS), for their support. She reaffirmed AMMREN's commitment to bridging the gap among health research, policy, communities, and the media. When communities are informed, health workers engaged, and the media equipped with the knowledge and tools to report effectively, stronger pathways towards responsive and accountable health systems can be created.
The collaboration between AMMREN and GHS has the potential to create a more responsive and accountable health system in Ghana. By working together, the two organizations can help ensure that communities are actively involved in shaping their healthcare services and that their voices are heard. This can lead to improved health outcomes and a stronger health system overall.
