Former Ghanaian Ambassador to China, Edward Boateng, has congratulated John Boadu and Justin Frimpong Kodua on their election and re-election as National Chairman and General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mr. Boateng expressed his congratulations on October 4, 2026, following the NPP's National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3. He urged both leaders to focus on rebuilding the party, strengthening its structures, and uniting its members ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Boateng praised John Boadu's extensive experience within the NPP, which he believes positions him to lead efforts to reorganize the party from the grassroots to the national level. Boadu's journey within the NPP, from the polling station and constituency levels to National Youth Organiser, National Organiser, Acting General Secretary, General Secretary, and now National Chairman, is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the party. Mr. Boateng had previously endorsed Boadu's candidacy, citing his experience, institutional knowledge, temperament, and willingness to listen.
Mr. Boateng also congratulated Justin Frimpong Kodua on retaining the General Secretary position, describing his victory as an expression of the confidence delegates have placed in him. Kodua made history by becoming the first person since Dan Botwe to win election as General Secretary for a second consecutive term, securing 4,486 votes. Mr. Boateng urged Kodua to work closely with Chairman Boadu to reorganize and strengthen the party's structures, ensuring they function effectively from the polling station to the national level.
The NPP's National Delegates Conference saw John Boadu elected as National Chairman with 2,888 votes, defeating Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, who polled 2,408 votes. Former National Chairman Paul Afoko received 790 votes, while Sammy Crabbe obtained 41 votes. Mr. Boateng emphasized that the new leadership must use their mandate to rebuild a disciplined, united, and formidable NPP capable of restoring public confidence in the party.
Mr. Boateng called on both leaders to promote reconciliation within the party and bring together members who supported different candidates during the internal elections. He stressed that every tradition and tendency within the NPP must find a place in the rebuilding effort. The new National Chairman and General Secretary must work with the entire national leadership to build a strong and united political organization capable of supporting the NPP's Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In response to his re-election, Justin Kodua stated that he has no issue with John Boadu and that they will work together. Meanwhile, John Boadu has pledged to rebuild the NPP from the grassroots and restore the party's 'winning machinery.' He also unveiled a new NPP strategy to win back youth and modernize the party. Boadu began the NPP rebuild from the grassroots ahead of the 2028 election, aiming to unite the party after the heated leadership contest.
Other NPP leaders, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Boakye Agyarko, have congratulated John Boadu and the new NPP executives, pledging their support ahead of the 2028 general elections. The NPP's rebuilding efforts and strategies will be crucial in determining the party's performance in the upcoming elections.
