Advocate Ferida Philip Nyanan, an aspirant for the SPLM flag bearer position in the upcoming Upper Nile State gubernatorial election, has announced that alleged threats against her and 17 members of her delegation have been resolved. Nyanan had alleged that individuals affiliated with the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) threatened her delegation in an attempt to pressure her to withdraw from the SPLM primaries.
According to Nyanan, the individuals allegedly offered her money and later a senior ministerial position in the state government in exchange for abandoning her gubernatorial ambitions. She claimed that she rejected both offers. The alleged threats were reportedly made because the individuals questioned whether a woman could govern Upper Nile State during the current sensitive period.
Nyanan confirmed that the dispute had been settled after the acting governor, James Kuong, summoned both parties for discussions. She told Eye Radio that she had not initially reported the alleged threats to the relevant authorities because she expected them to stop. The incident occurred as the SPLM prepares to conduct its internal primaries in Malakal on October 29.
Nyanan declared her intention to contest the SPLM primaries on October 9, outlining a programme focused on unity, security, development, and improved public services. Her priorities include supporting the return of displaced communities, strengthening healthcare services, maintaining water networks, rehabilitating roads, and encouraging young people to participate in development rather than take up arms.
The allegations of threats have not been independently verified, and Eye Radio reported that it had not obtained a response from the SSPDF regarding the claims. The SPLM primaries are a crucial step towards the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
Nyanan's gubernatorial ambitions have been a subject of interest, with her pledging to address the challenges facing Upper Nile State. If successful, she would be a significant figure in the state's leadership, helping to shape its future and stability. The resolution of the alleged threats has paved the way for her continued participation in the SPLM primaries.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by women in politics in South Sudan. Nyanan's determination to pursue her gubernatorial ambitions despite the alleged threats is seen as a testament to her commitment to her vision for Upper Nile State. The international community and local observers will be watching the SPLM primaries and the general elections closely, given their significance for South Sudan's future.
