Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, chaired a cabinet meeting to discuss the reality and prospects of the agriculture, rural development and maritime fishing sectors. The meeting was previously scheduled for October 4, 2026, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic. The meeting aimed to review the current state of these sectors and outline future plans.
During the meeting, President Tebboune issued several directives and instructions to improve the agriculture sector. He ordered the preparation of a new plan for the local organization of agriculture, aiming for greater transparency, more accurate and modern statistics. The President also instructed the creation of a specific office for dry legumes, while keeping grains under the Algerian Professional Grains Office.
President Tebboune also emphasized the need to combat all forms of speculation and hoarding of agricultural production. He stated that the state has opened up the field to buy strategic crops at the best prices. Additionally, he banned the use of corn as green fodder for livestock in Algeria, as it has not positively impacted meat production and has led to a sharp decline in corn grain.
The President ordered the Minister of Agriculture to prepare a plan to distribute tasks in the maritime fishing sector to a delegated minister and to a secretary of state for forests. He also instructed the minister to prepare for the upcoming harvest season by providing necessary equipment to all production areas. Furthermore, President Tebboune stressed the importance of preventing land abandonment and ensuring that land is used productively.
President Tebboune also focused on improving statistics and data collection in the agriculture sector. He ordered the immediate creation of a service dedicated to statistics for all activities and professions related to the sector. This aims to end delays in supplying the national market with consumer goods, particularly staple products.
The President also addressed the issue of food safety, instructing the government to multiply control laboratories at ports and airports. He emphasized that this measure is crucial to protect public health. The President also called on the government to be vigilant and to take all necessary measures to protect citizens' security and health.
The cabinet meeting concluded with the approval of decrees appointing and terminating tasks in high-ranking positions. President Tebboune's directives aim to improve the agriculture sector, enhance food security and promote rural development in Algeria.
