Algerian Minister of Industry Djamila Tamazirt and Minister of Energy Mohamed Arkab recently visited the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou to inspect ongoing projects and announce new initiatives. During a press conference, Minister Tamazirt revealed that a committee has been established to address issues affecting industrial zones and find solutions by the end of the year. This move aims to revitalize and make these zones viable.
The ministers launched several projects, including the construction of a 60/30 Kv substation in Chaoufa, which will improve electricity supply to the regions of Azazga, Fréha, and Bouzegène. This project is expected to enhance the overall energy infrastructure in the area. Additionally, the ministers initiated work on a 16-inch natural gas pipeline that will connect the communes of Aït Chafaa, Zekri, and Akerrou.
The new gas pipeline will enable 10% of the Tizi Ouzou wilaya to access natural gas, benefiting around 8,000 households. Furthermore, approximately 4,000 households in neighboring Béjaïa wilaya, specifically in the communes of Aït Mendil, Béni Kssila, Adekkar, Taourirt, Ighil, and Tifra, will also be connected. This development is expected to significantly improve living standards in these areas.
The ministers also laid the foundation stone for an extension to the UNEL factory in partnership with VIJAI Electricals and Sonelgaz. This project, valued at 1,976,417,608.37 Algerian dinars, will have a production capacity of 120 transformers per year. The facility is expected to be completed within 16 months and will create 400 permanent jobs.
The new factory will focus on producing large-power transformers and will include a metal construction unit to meet its needs and reduce reliance on imports. The project aims to meet national demands and explore export opportunities. Minister Tamazirt also addressed the issue of mobile phone assembly plants, stating that they will lose fiscal benefits if they do not move beyond mere sales.
During their visit, the ministers faced some opposition at the ENEL factory, where protesters voiced their concerns and displayed banners. However, this did not hinder the ministers from completing their mission. The visit demonstrated the government's commitment to driving industrial growth and development in the region.
