Algerian Minister of State for Energy, Mohamed Arkab, was received by Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine in Niamey, Niger, as part of a working visit to the country. The meeting was attended by the Algerian ambassador to Niger, the CEO of Sonatrach, and other high-ranking officials from both countries. The discussions focused on reviewing the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Niger, particularly in the energy sector.
The two sides explored ways to strengthen their partnership and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They reviewed ongoing joint projects, including a research and exploration project led by Sonatrach in the Kufra oil field. The Nigerien side also proposed cooperation on other oil blocks, including the Bilma block. Additionally, the parties discussed enhancing cooperation between Sonatrach and Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP.
The meeting also covered cooperation in refining and petrochemicals, including maintenance work at Niger's Zinder refinery. The parties expressed interest in expanding cooperation between their respective institutions in this field. Furthermore, they reviewed the file on joint marketing of Nigerien crude oil and explored ways to develop this cooperation, enabling Niger to better exploit its oil resources and enhance its marketing capabilities.
The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project was a key topic of discussion, with both sides reaffirming its strategic importance for regional energy integration and economic development. They emphasized the need for continued coordination to move forward with the project, including launching a topographic survey of the pipeline route on Nigerien territory and conducting environmental impact studies.
Minister Arkab stated that Algeria, under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will continue to support Algerian-Nigerien cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. This support includes accompanying Nigerien institutions, transferring Algerian expertise, and developing capacities and skills to serve the economic and energy development of both countries.
Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine highlighted the importance of historical and fraternal relations between Algeria and Niger. He praised Sonatrach's role in supporting and developing Niger's energy sector and expressed Niger's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Algeria and expanding partnership areas between the two countries.
