Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, was received by Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, in Niamey, on September 22, 2026. The meeting was attended by Algerian Ambassador to Niger, as well as senior executives from Algerian energy company, Sonatrach. The meeting aimed to review the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Niger in the energy sector.

The two sides reviewed ongoing joint projects, including a research and exploration project conducted by Sonatrach in the Kufra oil field. They also explored opportunities for cooperation in other oil fields proposed by Niger, including the Bilma field.
The meeting also addressed ways to strengthen cooperation between Sonatrach and Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP. The two sides discussed exchanging expertise, training, and developing Niger's national capacities to support the growth of its oil and gas industry. They also touched on cooperation in refining and petrochemicals, including maintenance work at Niger's Zinder refinery.
The parties also discussed the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, which aims to connect Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. They reaffirmed the strategic importance of this project in promoting regional energy integration and supporting economic and social development in the region. The two sides emphasized the need for continued coordination to move the project forward.
Minister Arkab emphasized that Algeria, under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will continue to support Algerian-Nigerien cooperation in the energy sector. This includes providing support to Nigerien institutions, transferring Algerian expertise, and developing capacities to promote economic and energy development in both countries.
Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, highlighted the historical and fraternal relations between Algeria and Niger. He praised Sonatrach's role in supporting and developing Niger's energy sector and expressed Niger's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Algeria and expanding partnership between the two countries.
